Food Water
How do birds find food and water in the winter?

I saw some birds sitting on the frozen pool yesterday during our first snowfall of the year, and made me wonder how the birds find water in winter, and how to get food? (Not supplied by feeders or persons.) I was very curious when I saw these birds, because it seemed a bit confused as the weather changed so quickly.

It depends on the species. Some, like the Northern Cardinal, survive with berries that are left in the bushes. Some, like climbing and some woodpeckers, have saved the seeds under the bark of trees. If snow is not too deep, the birds can still scratching away and collect the grain from agricultural fields. Many birds eat snow to get enough water in the winter when their normal water sources are frozen. Only raptors (birds that hunt and eat other birds or mammals) get their moisture from food. Most seeds and grains feeding birds migrate supply either, or they get most of their food and water from human sources, ie birds and bird feeders. Here is something information http://www.gf.nd.gov/multimedia/ndoutdoors/issues/2003/feb/docs/natural-food.pdf "The best winter wildlife foods are characterized by two qualities: persistence in the branch or vine, and low attractiveness in the fall. persistent berries are those that remain on the ground longer in winter, like Hawthorne, hackberry, Russian olive Siberian crab, mountain ash, American cranberry, sumac, snowberry, bittersweet. Many of these berries are initially very unpleasant for life wild and require freezing and thawing before being desirable. Berries that persist into late winter are very important because they are available at a time when natural (Or artificial) food supplies are limited or covered by snow. Songbirds and game birds greater benefit equally from this type of natural food source. Like most creatures, the birds need three things to survive winter: shelter, food and water. The simplest is the water supply. When natural water sources are frozen, the birds will come to not only birdbaths for drinking but for bathing. feathers bathing conditions of isolation and therefore helps to protect warm-blooded animals from the cold. Judee Sill’s follow-up to her 1971 self-titled debut sadly also turned out to be her final album, yet Heart Food stands neck and neck with its wondrous predecessor as a near-flawless slice of 1970s pop-flavored Laurel Canyon folk. The production and arrangements here are much grander then on Judee Sill, with her original piano- and guitar-driven songs enhanced by strings, church organ, harmonica, …
